Gillian A. Hawker, MD, MSc., is a Rheumatologist/Clinical Epidemiologist and Physician in Chief of Medicine at Women’s College Hospital, where she holds the FM Hill Chair in Academic Women’s Medicine and the Senior Distinguished Rheumatologist Investigator Award from the Arthritis Society of Canada. She is Director of the Canadian Osteoarthritis Research Program and its affiliated Multidisciplinary Osteoarthritis Program. She holds cross-appointments in the Clinical Epidemiology Program, Department of Health Policy Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto, and at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences.
Hawker is an active member on several committees and boards, including the Performance Measurement Advisory Board of the Ontario Health Quality Council, the National Institutes of Health Osteoarthritis Initiative Data Safety Monitoring Board, the External Advisory Board of the Brigham and Women’s Multidisciplinary Arthritis Centre, and the Scientific Advisory Committee for Osteoporosis Canada. In addition, she is a member of the Editorial Boards of Arthritis Care and Research and Journal of Rheumatology.
Hawker’s research focuses on two common musculoskeletal diseases of aging: osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Her osteoarthritis research is focused on health services research examining disparity in access to osteoarthritis care, in particular total joint replacement of the hip and knee, and clinical epidemiologic research examining the course and consequences of osteoarthritis, including the interrelationships of pain, fatigue, sleep, and mood in this condition.
